Dries Samyn

Dries Samyn is a software engineer with 27 years of experience, currently working on data platform and streaming infrastructure. He spends most of his time on the systems where being subtly wrong is expensive: high-throughput data pipelines, analytical infrastructure, and the tooling around them. He is the creator of Kapper, an open-source Kotlin database library, and writes about critical thinking in AI-assisted engineering at criticalengineer.ai.

The Critical Engineer: Collaboration When AI Makes Code Cheap
The SDLC has barely changed since software engineering began: a linear, largely single-threaded process, optimised for a world where writing code was the expensive part. AI has made expression cheap, and the whole coordination layer is now built for a scarcity that no longer exists. I argue the unit of coordination should move from the ticket to the plan, the reasoning behind the work, as a shared, continuously changing artefact rather than something local to one engineer.
