Everyone has heard of feature flags: boolean switches in your code that you can flip at runtime for different users, environments, etc. But they are just one part of a much broader best practice called “application configuration”. Big tech companies like Meta and Google have internal tools for structured, type-safe app configuration that help them accelerate development of products and backend services. This talk dives into what app configuration is and how it can empower your whole team to move faster, including your nontechnical colleagues.

Watch video: Setting Up Feature Flags with React
This Talk discusses setting up feature flags with React, which allows for controlled rollouts of new features. Feature flags provide more control without touching the source code and can target specific users or types of users. In React, feature flags can be created and configured using Split.io. Different treatments can be applied to determine if a feature should be shown. Feature flagging provides control and flexibility in development.

Watch video: Feature Flagging With React
Feature management in React.js applications involves techniques like feature flags and toggles, allowing for decoupling of application deployment from feature releases. Gradual rollouts, remote configuration, and audience targeting are key techniques. Increased control and flexibility in feature management provide targeted launches and quick rollbacks, but there are pain points like lack of reviews and approval workflow. Infrastructure as code (IAC) and GitOps are practices that can be combined with feature management. Feature Advisor is a tool that helps with feature management in React applications, focusing on principles rather than the tool itself.

Using Feature Flags to Enable Testing in Production
Today's Talk discusses enabling tests in production, including challenges with staging environments, the use of feature flags for testing, and automating feature flag testing. It also covers running tests in production while ensuring no impact on real users, determining what to test in production, recommended tools and dependencies, and mitigating risks. The importance of testing in production and shifting the testing culture is emphasized, along with the need for a solid automation framework and managing feature flag dependencies.
