Welcome to my inaugural remote workshop for RemixConf Europe. We'll cover error logging, multi-page forms, patching Remix, and multi-tenant apps with Prisma. We'll discuss expected and unexpected errors, code and error handling, and server-side error logging. Additionally, we'll explore handling form fields and errors, using typed JSON and overriding default functions, and managing data for multi-page forms. We'll also touch on storing session and form data, using standard fetch and form data in a Remix app, and multi-tenant Remix apps with Prisma. Finally, we'll delve into patching Remix to overcome limitations and testing with Remix and Playwright.

I'm going to be talking about modern databases in the React ecosystem. The development work used to be simple, with front-end and backend developers working separately. However, with the rise of Node.js and full stack frameworks like Next.js, the ecosystem has evolved. Now, front-end developers are often writing back-end code, and databases have become a crucial component. In this talk, we'll explore the modern solutions and their strengths when it comes to databases. We'll discuss the changes in the databases world and how React and other frameworks have made accessing databases easier. Serverless databases simplify the complexity of managing databases, but there are considerations like vendor lock-in and limited customization options. AI databases with vector functionality provide deeper searches on unstructured data. Multimodal databases like SurrealDB allow for different kinds of data in one storage. Tools like Prisma, Drizzle, and EdgeDB provide good type safety and ease of use. EdgeDB is a graph relational database that combines SQL and GraphQL, making querying relations easier. Database selection is not permanent, and it's important to consider user needs and stay informed about modern trends. Early adoption of cutting-edge databases comes with risks, but also full-time support. Using the best tool for the job is crucial, and trying new tricks for specific data is recommended.

Traditional databases often hinder React developers' workflow. New approaches, including serverless solutions, are revolutionizing data handling in React apps. This talk explores how modern database paradigms enable end-to-end type safety, create ergonomic workflows, and support rapid iteration. Hello, everybody. I'm Elion, the Lead Developer Relations at React Bricks. Astro is a web framework for content-driven development, similar to Next or Nuxt. It supports TypeScript and JavaScript and compiles down to HTML and CSS, resulting in excellent indexability and SEO. HTML and JavaScript can be used together with Astro through client directives, allowing for interactive websites while optimizing performance. Astro's server islands architecture delays rendering until all content is available, and client-side interactivity is achieved through battery API and server authentication. Astro provides native data loading and supports open-source loaders for different content types. Collections and Astro Actions make content reuse and API usage easier. Zalt Schema, AstraDB, and ORM are available for form data handling. AstroDB and Starlight enable the use of different databases and on-demand rendering. Astro 5.0 introduces better localization, simplified rendering modes, and a content layer API. There is an upgrade guide for Astro 5.0 and it integrates well with React. Astro is recommended for content-driven websites but may not be ideal for building dashboards or authentication services. Astro has influenced other frameworks and aims to push the web towards better standards.

In this talk, we'll explore building full-stack web applications powered by Astro and Astro DB.We'll start by discovering the basics of Astro, why and where it's useful, and how to build a simple web application with it. We'll discover how to use Astro's hybrid rendering mode to add API routes and dynamic server-side rendering to the application.Then we'll dive into Astro DB, a simple, yet powerful ORM used to communicate between a LibSQL database and your Astro application. Also, Astro 5.0-beta has been released, we’ll round up the talk by looking at the new features, some demos and discovering how to upgrade.

The speaker works on the Atlas Device SDKs, which allows testing code across multiple platforms and has support for multiple programming languages. They also built Mocha Remote CLI, a tool for running tests on Node.js and in a browser. The speaker mentions the popularity of Jest and the alternative Vitest for running tests on platforms like Android and iOS.

Running tests on Node.js is common practice for app and library developers. But when your library is integrating more deeply with the platform, operating system or JS engine, you need to run tests “on device” increases. The Realm JS team at MongoDB is faced with this challenge, as we’re maintaining a React Native library with native modules. In this talk I’ll share the “mocha-remote” package which we’ve built to help us run tests “on device” while getting reporting and remaining in control from the comfort of our terminals.

Key-value databases are optimized for high availability and partition tolerance, making them ideal for storing non-relational data structures. They prioritize speed and high availability over consistency, making them suitable for simple data models or one-to-one mappings. However, they have limited query capabilities compared to relational databases. Some available options for key-value databases include DynamoDB, CloudFlare Worker KV, Redis, and FoundationDB. Using key-value databases in TypeScript requires addressing challenges such as serialization, deserialization, secondary indexes, relationships, and validation. The Talk includes a demonstration of an application that showcases the use of secondary indexes and the implementation of a key-value database in Deno or Redis.

Key/value (KV) databases are becoming ever more popular in web applications. Their super-fast response times and ability to support eventual consistency reads make them especially well suited for apps running on globally distributed edge servers. But with how fast this tech is moving, you might not be fully up to speed on how to use this type of database with TypeScript. In this session, we'll explore good use cases for KV databases, examine several production deployment options, and demonstrate how to effectively hydrate TypeScript objects from values in a KV database.

And there are many reasons why we should all be excited about it and many other AI/ML innovations. But how do you bring them into your tech stack, your website/backend, to work with your data and provide AI-driven search and data augmentation? There is a new generation of AI Native databases, which use deep learning models to find answers to natural language queries. We are talking about the ability to search through text, images, videos, DNA, or any unstructured data, all with a single query. The rule of thumb: if there is an ML model, we can search through it. Join me to learn about the foundation blocks (LLMs and vector embeddings, Vector Databases), how they all play together and most importantly - how you can build something yourself with open-source tech. Welcome to a talk on Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) and its potential pitfalls. The speaker discusses issues with modals and the MVC pattern, as well as the benefits of structuring code around system features instead. They introduce PlatformaticDB as a solution for easy backend development, showcasing its deployment and testing capabilities. The talk also covers integrating with Next.js, writing custom SQL queries, and the speaker's plans for future support and database compatibility.

What's an ORM? An Object-Relational Mapping tool (ORM) is a library to map a SQL table to a Class. In most cases, ORMs force the users to structure their code to have Model objects that include both data access and business logic. Once upon a time, I did several projects using ORMs as I followed the common belief that they would simplify the development and maintenance of projects. I was wrong. ORMs are often a hurdle to overcome for the most complex part of a project. As the next stop of my journey, I recommended people use the native languages of their databases, e.g., SQL. This works great for the most part, but it creates quite a struggle: there is a lot of boilerplate code to write that can be pretty tedious. I was wrong, again. Today I'm presenting you Platformatic DB.

Today's Workshop focused on building a real-time chat application with Superbase and Remix. The workshop covered various topics such as creating Superbase tables and data, fetching data from Superbase, enabling row-level security, adding Superbase authentication with GitHub, and troubleshooting authentication and data access. The workshop also touched on mutating data in Superbase, implementing real-time subscriptions, and deploying the application. Additional resources and courses were mentioned for further learning. Overall, the Workshop provided a comprehensive overview of building a real-time chat application using Superbase and Remix.

DynamoDB is a next-generation key-value database that is low-latency, scalable, and easy to use. It offers advantages such as local development options, a generous free tier, and fast performance. Common misconceptions about DynamoDB being expensive or hard to learn are debunked. The Talk covers topics like basic modeling, separating concerns, working with DynamoDB in Remix, and building a DynamoDB client. Overall, DynamoDB is a powerful database that integrates well with Remix and provides efficient data access patterns.

Remix is the best React framework for working with the second most important feature of the web: forms. (Anchors are more important.) But building forms is the fun part: the tricky part is what happens when a web consumer submits a form! Not the client side validation logic but the brass tacks backend logic for creating, reading, updating, destroying, and listing records in a durable database (CRUDL). Databases can be intimidating. Which one to choose? What are the tradeoffs? How do I model data for fast queries? In this talk, we'll learn about the incredibly powerful AWS DynamoDB. Dynamo promises single-digit millisecond latency no matter how much data you have stored, scaling is completely transparent, and it comes with a generous free tier. Dynamo is a different level of database but it does not have to be intimidating.

Remix and Prisma enable front-end developers to become full-stack developers by working across different parts of the stack without diving into complexities. They provide a great framework for writing code and interacting with databases, making it easier to be a full-stack developer. Prisma's ORM allows mapping database models to JavaScript or JSON models. Developing a full stack app with Remix requires structuring components and loaders differently, but simplifies development by focusing on one place.

Remix gives developers the power to write their frontend and backend code in one unified location and language, which drops the fullstack barrier significantly for frontend devs and newer developers. The remaining piece, however, is the database. Throw Prisma into the mix and you've got a powerful fullstack experience with a very low learning curve. We all love writing types in TypeScript, but we often find ourselves having to write types in another language as well: SQL. This talk will present the choose-your-own-adventure story that you face when combining TypeScript and SQL and will walk you through the tradeoffs between the various options. Combined poorly, TypeScript and SQL can be duplicative and a source of headaches, but done well they can complement one another by addressing each other's weaknesses.

Today's workshop focused on building GraphQL APIs using Neo4j, a graph database. The Neo4j GraphQL library was used to generate the API, handle data fetching, and solve the N plus one query problem. Custom logic and authorization rules were added using Cypher statements and the auth schema directive. The workshop also covered filtering, sorting, and pagination options in GraphQL, as well as the integration of Neo4j with Code Sandbox and Neo4j Aura DB. Overall, the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of building GraphQL APIs with Neo4j and highlighted the benefits and challenges of using this technology.

Relational Database Modeling for GraphQL

The Talk introduces NativeGraphQL, which translates a GraphQL query into one FQL query, offering advantages over traditional GraphQL resolvers. The VANA approach to NativeGraphQL avoids the n plus one problem and provides several benefits. FQL is a good fit for NativeGraphQL as it solves the tree traversal problem and offers the same advantages as the rest of the native FQL language. Native GraphQL also provides multi-region scalability, ACID, and transactionality out-of-the-box.

InfluxDB is an open source time series database that empowers developers to build IoT, analytics and monitoring software. It is purpose-built to handle the massive volumes and countless sources of time-stamped data produced sensors, applications and infrastructure. This workshop showcases a fully functional sample application called IoT Center that is built on InfluxDB. This application demonstrates the capabilities of the InfluxDB platform to develop a JavaScript-enabled time-series-based application. It collects, stores and displays a set of values that include temperature, humidity, pressure, CO2 concentration, air quality, as well as provide GPS coordinates from a set of IoT devices. With this data stored in InfluxDB, the application can query this data for display as well as write data back into the database.
