State management in React is a highly discussed topic with many libraries and solutions. Jotai is a new library based on atoms, which represent pieces of state. Atoms in Jotai are used to define state without holding values and can be used for global, semi-global, or local states. Jotai atoms are reusable definitions that are independent from React and can be used without React in an experimental library called Jotajsx.

Jotai is a state management library. We have been developing it primarily for React, but it's conceptually not tied to React. It this talk, we will see how Jotai atoms work and learn about the mental model we should have. Atoms are framework-agnostic abstraction to represent states, and they are basically just functions. Understanding the atom abstraction will help designing and implementing states in your applications with Jotai

Starbeam is a library for building reactive user interfaces with JavaScript, similar to Svelte, Vue, and Ember. It provides a data structure and query feature for filtering and sorting. The useStarBeam function ensures JSX reconciliation only occurs when reactive dependencies change. Starbeam tracks every read and write operation to update the component accordingly. It can be used with React and other frameworks, and offers debugging tools and locale integration.

The distinction between server state and client state in our applications might be a new concept for some, but it is very important to understand when delivering a top-notch user experience. Server state comes with unique problems that often sneak into our applications surprise like: - Sharing Data across apps- Caching &amp; Persistence- Deduping Requests- Background Updates- Managing “Stale” Data- Pagination &amp; Incremental fetching- Memory &amp; Garbage Collection- Optimistic Updates Traditional “Global State” managers pretend these challenges don’t exist and this ultimately results in developers building their own on-the-fly attempts to mitigate them. Hi, I'm Tom and I want to talk about rendering data that may disagree when using SQL queries. It's important to consider whether these queries are in the same transaction or separate transactions, as this affects data rendering. Implementing transactions can ensure atomic data queries and avoid inconsistencies. Managing data consistency in React can be challenging, especially with rich clients and live updates. React Query offers ways to handle data invalidation logic. Asynchronous data fetching in React can lead to inconsistent data between requests.

The data returned from one endpoint to a frontend app should reflect the state of the world at a (recent!) point in time in the past. But it may not! And the data returned from multiple endpoints often reflects the state of the world at multiple points. What can be done, and what should be done? What's the worse that could happen, and what's the worse that reasonably, probably going to happen? Let's talk through the tradeoffs, look at how some some teams approach it, and hear how much they actually care.

Loading data in parallel using promise.all is four times faster than loading in a waterfall manner. Split promise.all into two when handling data dependencies. Caching static data can significantly improve page load time. Optimize product pages by reducing awaits and prioritizing essential content. Use suspense boundaries and skeleton UI for optimal data loading. Place non-blocking requests before primary data request for better performance. Remix client cache handles caching automatically. Consider data dependencies and prioritize critical content.

More often than not, performance starts with how data is loaded in your app. Which data has dependencies? Which data is critical to the page? Which data is variable? Static? Personalized? Available offline? In this talk, we'll use Remix to explore how different data loading strategies can improve your user’s experience.

State machines, reinforcement learning, and large language models play a key role in creating intelligent agents. Graph algorithms can be used to traverse state machines and improve user experience. State agents store knowledge in short-term and long-term memory, while state machines provide guardrails and automation in multi-step processes. The impact of Language Models (LLMs) on UI performance and the future experimentation of building AI models to identify state machines are also discussed.

Managing state in React is complicated. Humans are even more complicated. As developers, it's our job to deliver seamless and intuitive user experiences, but the sheer complexity of human behavior and the real world can make this harder than it should be. In this talk, we'll explore a radical new approach to app development where language models (LLMs) and reinforcement learning (RL) can be used to handle app logic in a more intelligent and human-centric way. We're bringing artificial intelligence to state management in ways that go much, much further than "call the OpenAI API and hope for the best". We spend a lot of time discussing which state library we should use, and fair. There are quite a few, from the common one everyone uses and loves to hate on, to that one quirky alternative, to several up and comers. However, discussing which library is best puts the cart before the horse. When figuring out how to handle state, we should first ask ourselves: what different categories of state do we need? What are the constraints of each category? How do they relate to each other? How do they relate to the outside world? How do we keep them from becoming a giant, brittle ball of yarn? And more. This might sound overwhelming, but never fear! In this talk, I'll walk you through how to answer these questions, and how craft an approachable, maintainable, and scalable state system. And yes, I will talk about how to pick a state management library too.

This is a short presentation on VALTEO, a proxy-based state management system that uses JavaScript's native idea of proxies to create observable and immutable state. The proxy tracks changes to the object and nested proxy objects, only re-rendering the component when a specific key changes. There is a gotcha with proxies in Valtio - avoid reassigning the proxy to a whole new object. Valtio integrates with Redux DevTools, making it even more powerful and convenient.

In this talk, we will explore how Valtio can simplify your React state management by providing a minimalist and performant solution. We will cover the basics of Valtio, including how to create and update a store and how to access and modify the store from your components. We will also dive into some advanced Valtio features, such as subscribing to changes in the store, andusing memoization to optimize your components' performanc. The talk also highlights the need for an external cache to store information about API calls and the use of a cleanup function to avoid memory leaks.  In this talk, Robert will discuss how React renders components (especially with regards to Suspense), and how to build a data-fetching library that functions correctly in light of those behaviors. JAS is a new framework for building apps around sync and secure collaborative data, promising to simplify app development by eliminating unnecessary complexity. CoJson is an abstraction that simplifies app development by implementing multi-device co-editing, user identities, permissions, sync, caching, and persistence. Jazz is an open source framework that provides idiomatic bindings for CoJSON, specifically in the browser. JAS provides powerful sync and storage capabilities, eliminating the need for external blob storage. Jazz React allows developers to use React and provides automatic subscriptions for reactive updates to core values. JAS offers instant interaction, offline sync, and the ability to rebuild Twitter with Jazz.

Users have come to expect real-time collaboration from best-in-class apps like Notion or Figma. But widely available tools and infrastructure for building multiplayer apps are only just emerging. In this talk, we’ll explore the open-source framework Jazz and the two new ideas powering it: Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) and verifiable permissions. By building a whole app with nothing but React and Jazz, we’ll see how this new approach radically simplifies building not only real-time multiplayer apps, but any kind of app in which users interact.

React has improved state management with built-in hooks like useState, useReducer, and useRef. Redux can still be used but it's recommended to avoid global state. Zustand is an alternative state manager that allows for easy creation of hooks. Proper architecture is important for accessing the global store. State managers can add extra bytes to the client's JavaScript bundle, so it's important to be selective in choosing libraries. Next.js and React routers are recommended for server-side rendering and personalized experiences can be achieved with spas.

NextJS 13.4 changed the game with the App Router and React Server components. The change to the state management model looks simple to start, but gets complex very quickly as you try to create the practical every-day user experiences that were straightforward in the pages model. We'll talk about the different state management models, how they work in the App Router, and how to decide which you should use.

React Query is not a data fetching library, but an Asian state manager. It helps keep data up to date and manage agent life cycles efficiently. React Query provides fine-grained subscriptions and allows for adjusting stale time to control data fetching behavior. Defining stale time and managing dependencies are important aspects of working with React Query. Using the URL as a state manager and Zustand for managing filters in React Query can be powerful.

In this talk, I'll explain React Query from a different perspective. After having maintained React Query for over two years and having answered many questions (often the same ones multiple times), I feel like there might be a fundamental understanding missing about the lib. I'll start with a quick introduction about my journey into open source and how I got to know React Query, followed by showing which mindset change is beneficial when working with React Query - how to "think in React Query". I'll have 3 major takeaways: 1) React Query is not a data fetching library It's an async state manager, we'll quickly talk about what makes a state manager, why React Query is one and what "async state" means. 2) staleTime is your best friend I've seen a bit of confusion about how to use React Query as a state manager, so I'll explain why setting staleTime is mostly all you need 3) parameters are dependencies This is important to understand to show the boundaries between client state and server state, and is essential when doing state management with React Query I will then end with a note on "separation of concerns" and about the tradeoffs of just calling `useQuery` wherever you need it in your component tree.

Recoil is a minimal and easy-to-learn state management library for React and React Native. It supports distributed and incremental state definition, React suspense, and provides hooks like useRecoilValue and useRecoilState. Recoil can be used in both React and React Native applications, allowing for easy reuse of state configurations. Testing Recoil is straightforward, with the ability to observe state changes and compare snapshots. Overall, Recoil is an experimental but promising alternative to Redux.

In our work we use Recoil - quite a new React state management tool that looks quite promising. Today's workshop focuses on state management in React using the Context API and Hooks. The Context API is now a viable option for state management and provides additional features for effective state management. Custom hooks can be created to handle local state and access values from the context. Combining multiple contexts and using the useMemo hook can prevent unnecessary component rerenders. The useReducer hook allows for more complex state logic, similar to Redux. Debugging can be done by creating custom hooks and logging actions.
